Linked Open Data Study and Analysis Report¶
The linked data paradigm involves practices to publish, share, and connect data on the Web, and offers a new way of data integration and interoperability. Publishing datasets using Linked Data technologies gives added value for decision support and business intelligence applications. In the web of Linked Data, data is organised, structured and application independent. The open data movement is a significant and emerging force towards this direction. Open data is public data which are easily discoverable, accessible, and available to people without any restriction.
Open linked data (LOD) serve a great cause, enabling transparency, accountability and good governance for public administrations. This is evident from international (e.g. data.gov.uk), and national efforts (e.g. geodata.gov.gr, which was developed by IMIS). As a side effect, Open Linked Data promote sustainable growth and offer a new paradigm for business models and public/private partnerships.
At IMIS, we have hands‐on expertise on how large collections of data from various fields (scientific, life‐science, environmental, cultural, scholar) must be organized, annotated, curated, and offered to end users, to support interoperability, value added services, and efficient knowledge management. The area of Open Linked Data is a conceptual breakthrough for our work, since it combines all of our past activities relating to the lifecycle of information, on a single, complete, and promising paradigm. By combining strong theoretical foundations from various fields, with simple solutions that are easy to grasp by end‐users, Open Linked Data form a unique opportunity for true semantic, operational and cognitive interoperability, across all domains of information management.
Roadmap¶
We have setup a roadmap with the followings tasks:- study generic linked data technologies,
- study RDF/Linked data visualizers,
- study SPARQL "human friendly", visual query editors,
- study business models for linked data,
- find interesting linked-data oriented technologies and businesses,
- apply them in real use-cases to produce high quality linked data,
- identify key research challenges.
